Pools and lakes

Inland waters have very diverse forms: rivers, lakes, marshes, ponds, high mountain lakes, peat bogs and peatlands. All of them are very sensitive spaces but, at the same time, essential for a large number of animals. Amphibians, such as the toads or the salamander, make their homes. Amphibians, such as the toads or the salamander, make their homes. Birds, such as the kingfisher or the grey heron, find their food there. And many other animals, such as the otter or pond turtle, shelter and breed in wetlands.

Sea and beach

In the 580 km of coastline, we find very different environments: beaches, dunes, cliffs and marshes that extend inland with rocky, pebbly, sandy or muddy beds. The Mediterranean is a very rich sea and by the waters that wash the Catalan coast we can see a vast array of fauna and flora. On the coast, in the sand or on the rocks, we will see unique species such as the shag, the red-tailed lizard or the palmetto. And if we dive into the water, we can swim among red coral, posidonia and dozens of different fish.

Forest and mountain

We live in a land of forests. 63.8% of the area of Catalonia is made up of forests that speak of the human history that has passed through them. Throughout the territory, we find young forests and very diverse mature forests, which produce a mosaic of pines, beech and oaks. When we walk through the forest or cross mountain meadows, if we use our five senses, we can see how a bearded vulture or a kite flies over us, how a roe deer jumps or how deer bleat and, at night, hear how frogs croak or the hoot of an owl.
