Practise responsible trail running

Trail running is a sport that has gained a large number of enthusiasts and practitioners in recent years. This has led to overcrowding in many areas, negatively affecting the already fragile flora and fauna that reside there. This overcrowding has also resulted in problems such as soil erosion, litter accumulation, and disturbances caused by noise during breeding or nesting seasons.

Problems it can cause

Overcrowding in trail running can generate several environmental problems that must be considered to preserve natural environments and local wildlife.

One of the most common problems is soil erosion, which can occur when runners skid or take shortcuts off the established path.

This erosion negatively affects the natural habitat and can cause irreversible damage to vegetation and soil.

Overcrowding can also have a major impact on threatened wildlife, especially if breeding or nesting periods are not respected.

Another problem arising from overcrowding is the accumulation of litter in the environment, increasing pollution in those areas.

Let’s not forget to enjoy our trail runs to the fullest, especially when accompanied by our dogs. However, it is important to keep our dogs on a leash to prevent conflicts with local wildlife.

Best practices

Let’s make trail running a responsible sport:

  • Before embarking on your route, make sure to gather information through the relevant authorities regarding the presence of protected species along your itinerary. Be prepared to modify your route if necessary.
  • It is crucial to stay on the marked path and avoid skidding or taking shortcuts off the designated path.
  • If you pass through an area with threatened fauna, ensure your dog is properly leashed.
  • Make sure there is no trace of your presence in the natural environment, and if you see anything that shouldn’t be there, take the initiative to pick it up and take it with you.
