Practise responsible rock climbing
Rock climbing is a fantastic activity for discovering our natural environment, but let’s not forget that rock faces are not climbing walls, and must be aware of the impact our presence has on the natural environment. Vertical cliffs hide a lot of biodiversity adapted to and dependent on this habitat, and our presence can affect it.
Problems it can cause
The presence of people in these places, especially during critical moments of the breeding period, such as nest establishment, incubation and chick rearing, can have extremely negative consequences for local wildlife. This human interference can lead to birds abandoning their nest, nesting failure, or even the death of chicks.
Additionally, it is crucial to consider that some rare and threatened plant species reside in these areas, unique to this specific habitat due to their specialisation. The presence of people can endanger these plants and their ability to reproduce and survive in that specific habitat
Best practices
To enjoy climbing responsibly and respectfully towards the environment, it is important to follow some coexistence rules:
- Respect the current regulations in each climbing area. Know and comply with local regulations in each area.
- Be aware of temporary climbing bans in areas with sensitive species or on paths and trails near cliffs with nests. These temporary restrictions are essential for protecting wildlife during critical breeding periods.
- If you intend to install a new climbing route, rappel or via ferrata, do a preliminary study of the area to understand its environmental impact. Ensure you obtain the necessary authorisation.
- The Park’s information services (if you are in a protected area) or the local Rural Agents’ office can advise you on whether or not the area is suitable.
- Share information with other climbers about local regulations and promote a culture of respect for the natural environment.
- Explore climbing by participating in mountaineering clubs or organisations. These entities are better suited to passing on this knowledge and the culture about how to behave in nature.
