Releasing animals, a serious problem

Each species is part of an ecosystem where it coexists with other species, establishing various relationships with those species, whether competitive, predatory, parasitic or others. The arrival of a new species disrupts these relationships and can lead to significant alterations, such as the extinction of another species or changes in the habitat.

Problems it can cause

Exotic species are those that are not native, and are therefore outside their natural and potential habitat. Some of these species become invasive when they cause considerable impacts on natural ecosystems or human activities. Exotic species have been introduced by humans, some accidentally and others intentionally, such as with pets.

An example is the release of Florida turtles after keeping them for some time in an aquarium. These turtles, considered invasive, displace native turtles while altering the vegetation structure and can serve as vectors for certain diseases.

Best practices

If you like animals, it is important to be aware of the impact that some species can have on the environment, and act responsibly by following these guidelines:

  • Do not release any animal into the environment; the consequences for the local wildlife can be disastrous. Moreover, any release of wildlife requires authorisation from the relevant authorities.
  • Domestic cats are significant predators that can destroy bird, reptile or small mammal biodiversity in some areas. Keep them under control and prevent them from roaming or leaving your home.
  • Aquatic ecosystems are fragile. Do not release fish or turtles into them, as they displace native species, modify the characteristics of vegetation and water and have effects on the entire ecosystem.
