Agriculture is a vital activity for the region. Not only does it provide us with healthy, local and seasonal food, but also helps preserve heritage, landscapes and centuries of tradition and culture. Within or very near some natural areas, you may find agricultural spaces. Agriculture sometimes plays a role in the life of natural parks. Fields and crops are the farmer’s workplace, so avoid entering these fields, picking fruits or vegetables, and make way for agricultural machinery.
Problems it can cause
Carrying out agricultural activities normally can be challenging in frequented spaces where other human activities may conflict with the farming sector. Leaving gates open, trampling on pasture grass, or allowing dogs to roam off-leash can add extra work for farmers, potentially leading them to abandonment of their activity.
While natural spaces may also serve as workplaces for farmers, we are merely visitors.
Best practices
The farming industry is in serious decline, and it is important to follow certain practices to contribute to the preservation of this traditional activity:
- Leave livestock fences and gates as you found them (open or closed).
- Avoid trampling crops or pasture grass; it serves as livestock feed.
- Keep in mind that agricultural machinery takes up more space than a regular vehicle and should be given passage on the roads.
- Respect the work of working dogs, whether they are herding or guarding dogs; they are not pets.
- Purchase local products: not only will you be consuming healthy, high-quality products, but you will also have a positive impact on the conservation of our environment.
- Be understanding and empathetic towards farmers and their activities.
- Keep dogs on a leash.
